2017 Honda Accord
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the programming actually take once you're at my car?

For a standard add-a-key on the 2017 Accord, the OBD programming itself runs about 10 to 20 minutes. The full visit, including any cutting needed and a proper function test of every button and every door, usually lands between 30 and 45 minutes. All-keys-lost takes longer because the immobilizer reset has a timed security procedure built into it. That pushes total on-site time to roughly 45 to 90 minutes depending on how the system responds.

Q: Can you get a key made faster than the dealer?

Almost always, yes. A dealer visit for this job typically means scheduling time, a service write-up, and shop hours billed even when the actual programming is a fraction of that. If they don't have the fob sitting on the shelf, add however long it takes to order and receive the part before the job even starts. We show up at your location with the fob and the equipment already in the van.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it for me?

Possibly, but there's a catch. Aftermarket fobs for the 2017 Accord vary a lot in quality, and some of them simply won't register correctly even with professional equipment. If the fob you bought matches the factory spec for this vehicle, there's a reasonable chance it'll take. If it's a generic clone that doesn't match, we may not be able to make it work no matter what tool we use. Best move: call before you buy anything online.

Q: My Accord starts fine with the fob in my hand, but the door handle touch unlock stopped working on one side. Is the fob failing?

Probably not the fob. If the car still recognizes the key for starting and the other door handle works normally, the key itself is almost certainly fine. Isolated touch-unlock failure on one door usually points to the handle sensor on that door or the wiring running to it, not the fob. Wipe down the handle area and test again. If it stays isolated to that one door, it's a door-side issue, not a key issue.

2017 Honda Accord Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Casa Conejo on a Tuesday morning. He'd just landed from a red-eye, walked to the economy lot, and his 2017 Accord wouldn't respond to anything. No lock, no unlock, no push-to-start wake. Just a quiet car sitting there ignoring him.

He had his bag in the trunk. The trunk wasn't popping without the fob working. He's standing in a parking lot at 6 a.m. with luggage he can't get to and a car he can't start.

He called the dealer first. Earliest availability was Thursday. He called a tow company. The quote came back high enough that he started searching for other options, and that's when he found me.

I met him at the lot about 45 minutes after he called. Getting the door open was the first step, and once we were in, I connected to the OBD port and checked the key status. Both his fobs were still registered to the car. Nothing had dropped out of memory. The whole problem was a dead CR2032 in the fob, which had killed the remote signal and the proximity wake function for push-to-start.

Swapped the battery, verified both fobs were communicating correctly, tested every function including the trunk release, and sent him on his way. He was home before most people had finished their morning coffee.

The dealer, two days later, plus a tow. He skipped all of that.

Honda Accord Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key after hours or on the weekend in Thousand Oaks?▼

Call us. Honda dealers in the area keep standard service department hours, and evenings, Sundays, and holidays are typically a dead end if you need a key same-day. We run mobile service in Thousand Oaks and the Casa Conejo area outside of those windows, so a Tuesday night or a Sunday morning doesn't leave you waiting until the dealer opens back up. One call tells you if we can get to you that day.
