1997 Honda Accord
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote for a 1997 Honda Accord and how does it work?

On the 1997 Accord, the remote is a separate key fob you carry alongside your metal ignition key. It handles the power locks and the other buttons on the fob. It does not start the car. The ignition key does that independently. The remote communicates with the car's receiver on a radio frequency. When it stops working, the usual causes are a dead CR2025 battery, corroded contacts inside the fob, or the remote falling out of sync with the vehicle.

Q: How long does the dealer process actually take for a 1997 Accord key and remote?

Longer than it should for a car this age. Some dealers treat older Honda key work as low priority, which means it gets pushed behind newer vehicles in the service queue. Add in check-in time, waiting for a tech, and the possibility that the parts counter needs to locate an older fob through their ordering system, and a job that should take under an hour can stretch to half a day or more.

Q: My 1997 Accord remote only works when I'm right next to the car. Is that a failing fob or something wrong with the car?

Almost always the fob. Short range on these older Honda remotes usually points to one of two things: a weak CR2025 that still has enough juice to register as "not dead" but can't power a clean signal, or corroded battery contacts inside the housing. The receiver on the car rarely fails. Start with a fresh CR2025 and clean the contact pads inside the fob. If range comes back, you're done.

Q: I bought a replacement remote online for my 1997 Accord. Will it just work, or does it need to be programmed?

It needs to be synced to your car. A replacement remote won't function right out of the package just because it fits. The fob has to be registered to your specific vehicle through a sync procedure before the car will respond to it. Confirm the fob you bought matches the factory FCC ID on your original remote before going further. If the ID matches, syncing it is a quick job.

1997 Honda Accord Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in the East End of Ojai. He'd had his 1997 Accord for years, one key, one remote, never thought about it.

Then the remote stopped responding. Doors had to be unlocked manually every time, which he'd lived with for a few weeks. What finally pushed him to call was losing the key itself. One key, no spare, no working remote. That's the position nobody wants to be in.

He'd looked up the dealer and got a number back that made him set the phone down for a minute.

I came out to him. The Accord was in the driveway, which made everything clean and simple. I cut a replacement key to the vehicle and got the new remote synced up. The 1997 Accord uses an onboard sync procedure, so there's no need for a dealer-level diagnostic interface on these. The process is done through the car itself. Quick, done on site.

He had a working key and a working remote inside of 45 minutes. He also walked away with a spare, which was the whole point. If one key goes missing again, he's not starting from zero.

The dealer quote came up once, briefly. He'd already moved on.

Honda Accord Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Honda dealer to get a replacement key and remote for my 1997 Accord?▼

No. A mobile locksmith can handle both the key and the remote for a 1997 Accord on site. The 1997 model is older enough that the remote sync procedure can be performed without dealer-level diagnostic equipment. You don't need to schedule a service appointment, and you don't need to tow the car anywhere. EZ Car Keyz comes to you in East End, cuts the key, and gets the remote paired. One visit, done.
