I got a call from a guy in Waverly Heights who had been sitting on a dead spare for about two years. The remote portion had stopped working, so he assumed the whole key was gone. His working key was fine, engine started, doors locked, no complaints. He just wanted a functional backup before something happened to the main one.

CR1616 inside, but it had been replaced at some point with the wrong cell, slightly thicker, and it had pushed the contact plate into a small bend. The remote was the only thing that had failed, and it failed because of a battery swap done years ago by someone who grabbed whatever was in the drawer.
Swapped the correct CR1616, straightened the contact, tested all four buttons at distance, verified the transponder was still enrolled and the engine started clean. Handed it back to him in less than twenty minutes.
He said he felt a little foolish. I told him the wrong battery in a remote head key is one of the most common things I see, and the fact that the chip still worked meant he got lucky. If he'd lost the main key in that window, the all-keys-lost job is a different conversation entirely.
He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and didn't have to go anywhere.
