1996 Honda Accord
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much harder is it when all keys are lost versus just making a spare?

On a 1996 Accord, losing all keys means I have to decode or pick the lock cylinder to make the ignition key, since there is no existing cut to copy. Making a spare when you still have one working key is faster because I can just duplicate the cut directly. Either way is doable on site. But the best move is always getting a spare made while the original is in hand.

Q: Are aftermarket remotes for the 1996 Accord worth buying?

It depends on the source. This generation uses an older keyless entry system, and the remote market for mid-90s Accords has a lot of variance in quality. The factory fob for this car carries a specific part number that aftermarket versions try to match, and some do a reasonable job while cheaper ones have weak transmitters or buttons that fail early. Owners on Honda forums consistently say the range on off-brand fobs is noticeably shorter than OEM.

Q: My 1996 Accord remote works but only from about a foot away. What is going on?

Almost always the battery. The CR2025 in these fobs puts out just enough voltage to look "not dead" on a basic test but not enough to push a strong signal. Swap it with a fresh CR2025 from a reputable brand, not a dollar-store cell, and test range again from across a parking lot. If range is still short after a new battery, open the fob and look at the contacts and the circuit board.

Q: Can I program the replacement remote for my 1996 Accord myself, or do I need a locksmith?

This generation Accord has an onboard programming sequence that some owners have had success with. It involves cycling the ignition in a specific pattern to put the car into programming mode, then pressing buttons on the remote. It is documented in owner forums and has worked for people adding a spare when they already have a working programmed remote in hand.

1996 Honda Accord Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was at a taco stand patio in Downtown Ojai after a long shift and her bag was gone. Someone had taken it right off the table. Keys, wallet, phone, all of it. She borrowed the cashier's phone, called the police, called her sister, then found my number through her sister.

Her 1996 Honda Accord was sitting in the lot with no keys at all.

The sister called the dealer first. They said they could order a replacement key, quoted a multi-day wait, said the car would need to come in, and recommended rekeying the locks since the stolen key could still open the doors. The combined estimate was not small.

I got there that night. The fob situation on this generation Accord is actually two separate pieces: a keyless entry remote that runs the door locks, and a cut metal ignition key. Two different things to replace. I decoded the lock cylinder right on site, cut a new ignition key, then got the new remote paired up. Before I left, I also walked her through how to manually lock with the key in case the new fob ever acts up.

She drove home that night. The stolen key can still physically open the door, but a locksmith can rekey the locks if she decides she wants that peace of mind later. For now she had a working key and a working remote, and she did not have to wait until Monday or arrange a tow.

The dealer estimate was for a multi-day job. Mine was done before the police called back.

Honda Accord Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 1996 Honda Accord key and remote?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. On a 1996 Accord, the ignition key and the keyless entry remote are two separate items, which matters for pricing. The dealer treats them as separate line items and adds labor on top. With EZ Car Keyz, I come to you in Downtown Ojai or wherever the car is sitting, cut the key on site, and get the remote sorted. No tow, no appointment days out, no separate charges for each piece of the job.
