She was at a taco stand patio in Downtown Ojai after a long shift and her bag was gone. Someone had taken it right off the table. Keys, wallet, phone, all of it. She borrowed the cashier's phone, called the police, called her sister, then found my number through her sister.
Her 1996 Honda Accord was sitting in the lot with no keys at all.
The sister called the dealer first. They said they could order a replacement key, quoted a multi-day wait, said the car would need to come in, and recommended rekeying the locks since the stolen key could still open the doors. The combined estimate was not small.
I got there that night. The fob situation on this generation Accord is actually two separate pieces: a keyless entry remote that runs the door locks, and a cut metal ignition key. Two different things to replace. I decoded the lock cylinder right on site, cut a new ignition key, then got the new remote paired up. Before I left, I also walked her through how to manually lock with the key in case the new fob ever acts up.
She drove home that night. The stolen key can still physically open the door, but a locksmith can rekey the locks if she decides she wants that peace of mind later. For now she had a working key and a working remote, and she did not have to wait until Monday or arrange a tow.
The dealer estimate was for a multi-day job. Mine was done before the police called back.
