2002 Honda Accord
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: The dealer said I have to tow my Accord in for a new key. Is that true?

Not if you call me. Dealers will default to that answer because their setup requires the car to be on their lot. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment for this generation of Honda doesn't need that. I come to the vehicle, cut the blade, and program the transponder chip through the OBD port on site. No tow, no drop-off, no waiting on a callback the next day.

Q: What do I need to show to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or the title. I also verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker before I start. Same standard a dealer would hold you to. If your registration is on your phone, that works. Just have the ID physical or a clear photo of it ready.

Q: I have a working key but the car cranks and won't start. Could this be a transponder issue?

It could be. On the 2002 Accord, if the immobilizer doesn't recognize the transponder in the key, the engine cranks but fuel delivery gets cut and it won't fire. Owners on Honda forums describe it as the car turning over normally and then just dying, sometimes with a security indicator light staying on or blinking after the attempt.

Q: Can I program a spare key myself on a 2002 Accord?

No. This generation of Honda requires professional equipment to register a new transponder key to the immobilizer. There's no owner-accessible ignition-turn sequence or button combination that adds a key on this vehicle. You need the right diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port to write the new key data. If you bought a blank online hoping to finish the job yourself, you still need a locksmith or dealer to do the programming half.

2002 Honda Accord Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A family from out of town was renting a place near Sea Air for the week. They had one key for the 2002 Accord they drove down, and somewhere between the beach and the rental, it went missing. Not the spare. The only one.

They called the dealer the next morning. The dealer told them to tow the car in, said they'd need to verify ownership in person, and could schedule the work for the following afternoon. The tow alone would have eaten half their day and a good chunk of their budget. They started asking around and found me online.

I pulled up to the rental that evening. The 2002 Accord uses a transponder turn-key setup, so I had the right blank with me. I decoded the lock mechanically, cut the key blade on my machine in the van, then connected to the OBD port and programmed the transponder chip to the car's immobilizer. The whole process ran about 25 to 30 minutes.

The key went in, the ignition turned, and the engine started on the first try. They had the rest of the evening back. The dealer quote was a fraction of nothing to them at that point. They just wanted to get to dinner.
