2022 Honda Accord
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Fair question. Here is what to check before anyone touches your car. Ask for the company name, a license number, and a firm written price before they start. Scam operations quote one number on the phone and double it once they are already in your driveway. It happens a lot with Honda smart key jobs because the tools and the process sound complicated, and some outfits try to make it sound more involved than it is to justify surprise charges.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. The new fob gets registered to your vehicle's immobilizer through the OBD port so the car recognizes it for starting. All button functions are tested on site before I close up the van. I walk both door handles, run the buttons, and confirm the start works. I don't hand you the key and drive off. If something isn't responding right, I find out while I am still there.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2022 Accord. Is all-keys-lost harder or more expensive than just adding a spare?

It does take longer. When at least one working key is present, adding a second key is a relatively quick registration job. All-keys-lost means the system has to be approached differently through the OBD port, and the process has a built-in timed sequence that you cannot rush. It is still a same-day, on-site job.

Q: My Accord start button works fine but the door handle touch sensors stopped responding. Is that a key problem?

Probably not the key. If the start button inside the cabin still recognizes the fob, the key is communicating. Touch-unlock on the door handles uses a separate antenna and sensor in each handle. When it fails on one door and not the other, that almost always points to the handle sensor or the wiring at that door, not the fob itself.

2022 Honda Accord Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over in Pierpont, right by the beach, I pulled up to a 2022 Accord parked on the street with the owner standing next to it holding her fob like it had personally offended her. She had already tried the fresh battery.

The fob would unlock the car from about a foot away if she held it up to the door handle, but anything past arm's length was dead. Start button still saw it inside the cabin, which told me the key hadn't been erased from the system.

She had texted me the VIN ahead of time, which I appreciated. I had the right blank with me already.

The fob housing had a small crack along the seam, the kind that happens when someone tries to open it with a flathead instead of the right pry tool. The battery wasn't the problem. The problem was that the crack had let just enough salt air in, given where she parks, to start working on the internal contacts.

I pulled out the working fob, read it, cut the blade for the new unit, and programmed the new key through the OBD port. Tested all five buttons, tested the start, walked both door handles. Everything clean.

I handed it to her and she pointed at the cracked fob. She wanted to know if she should keep it as a backup. I told her honestly: it will work until it doesn't, and at the beach, "until it doesn't" comes sooner than you'd think. She decided to call it retired.

The dealer had quoted her a wait and a number she didn't want to say out loud. She paid a fraction of that and didn't have to leave her neighborhood.
