2017 Jaguar F-Type
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key, and how does the 2017 F-Type version work?

A smart key is a fob that communicates wirelessly with the vehicle's security system to verify it is authorized before the engine will start. On the 2017 F-Type, the fob has five buttons and contains both the wireless electronics and a physical emergency blade tucked inside the housing. The blade slot on the F-Type is worth knowing about. The keyhole is not obvious from the outside.

Q: My Jaguar is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I actually do first?

Start with the CR2032. Even a battery that reads okay on a basic tester can be weak enough to cause intermittent recognition, especially in colder morning temperatures. Swap it with a fresh one, make sure the contacts are clean and the battery is fully seated, then retest. If both fobs are showing the same behavior, the problem is more likely on the vehicle side than the fob side.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I just program it myself?

No. The 2017 F-Type has no onboard self-programming sequence for smart key enrollment. Registering any fob, including one you sourced yourself, requires diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port. The vehicle's security module controls the enrollment process and there is no way around that with button presses or ignition tricks. That said, buying a compatible fob beforehand is not a bad move. It can reduce the parts cost if you already have the fob in hand when I arrive.

Q: I only have one working key left for my F-Type. Is that actually a problem?

Yes, and it is worth getting a spare made before you are down to zero. All-keys-lost on a system like this is a longer and more involved job than adding a key while one working fob is still present. When at least one key is active, the module can verify the existing authorization and the enrollment of the new fob goes faster.

2017 Jaguar F-Type Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked off the South Surfside waterfront on a Saturday when the call came in. F-Type owner, two fobs, one completely dead and one acting intermittent.

He had already done the CR2032 swap on the good fob. Still getting a key-not-detected warning on cold starts, then it would work fine twenty minutes later. He had been living with it for a couple weeks before deciding it was not going away on its own.

When I got there, the intermittent fob was the real puzzle. Dead battery in the other one made that one simple. I pulled the intermittent unit apart first. The battery contact points had a faint film on them, barely visible, but enough to cause a marginal connection under certain temperatures. I cleaned both contact surfaces, reseated the CR2032, and we immediately had consistent range again.

The fully dead fob was a different job. That one needed to be registered through the OBD port. I connected my equipment, read the existing key memory, enrolled the replacement fob, and verified the original intermittent fob was still properly registered alongside it. Then I cut the emergency blade on the replacement to match his lock.

After that I walked the car the way I always do. Every button from a distance, door handles, and three consecutive starts. He had been expecting me to hand him the fob and pull away. The testing part caught him off guard.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that made him feel like he was financing a second car. What he paid me was a fraction of that, and the whole job was done in his parking spot.

Jaguar F-Type Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key shell is cracking and the emergency blade is either missing or has never been cut. Can you sort that out without reprogramming the whole key?▼

Usually, yes. Shell damage and blade issues on the F-Type fob are often separate from the electronics inside. If the internal board is intact, I can transfer it into a new shell and cut the emergency blade to your lock, either from key code or by decoding the cylinder directly. No reprogramming needed in that scenario because the original board stays in place.
