A guy from the Upper East side of Santa Barbara called me on a Tuesday morning. He had his 2023 Carnival, his fob, and a problem: the car was not recognizing the key at all. He had already swapped the CR2032 himself after watching a video online. Still nothing. The dash was throwing a key-not-detected warning every time he got near the start button.
When I got there I opened the fob first, same as always. The battery was new, but the contact on the positive side had a slight upward bow to it, probably from whoever pried the case open before me. New cell, soft pressure point, not making reliable contact. I cleaned both terminals, gently corrected the contact geometry, and reseated the battery. Snapped the case back.
Still would not start. That told me something else was going on.
After checking the basics, it turned out the vehicle had lost its key registration, likely from a low-voltage event on the 12-volt side. The fob itself was fine. The car just did not know it anymore. I connected through the OBD port, pulled up the smart key module, and re-enrolled the fob. The whole process took about forty minutes on the driveway.
He asked what the dealer would have done. I told him they probably would have started with a multi-day appointment and a parts order. He shrugged, signed off, and went inside. Job done before his coffee got cold.
