My key broke. Can you pull it out and get me back on the road?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a standard call for me. I carry the tools to pull a broken piece from an ignition cylinder or door lock without damaging the hardware. Once it's out, I can cut a new key blade on site using your vehicle's lock data. On a 2024 EV6 the fob and the blade are separate concerns. The fob itself houses the electronics, and the emergency blade is a separate insert. If the blade snapped but the fob body is intact, in many cases the electronics stay untouched and we're just dealing with cutting a replacement blade. If the whole fob needs replacing, that's a programming job done through the diagnostic port on site.

What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the EV6?

Your 2024 EV6 uses a proximity-based smart key. The fob communicates with antennas in the door handles and inside the cabin. When the fob is near a door handle, touching the handle locks or unlocks the car. When the fob is inside the vehicle, the start button recognizes it and allows the car to power on.

There's also an emergency blade tucked inside the fob body. If the fob battery dies completely, that blade opens the door mechanically. Then you use the fob-to-button backup method to start the car while the battery is flat.

If the fob itself gets damaged or lost, replacement requires programming through the vehicle's diagnostic port. There's no button sequence or ignition-turn trick that adds a new smart key on this system. It needs equipment.

Question 3

My EV6 is showing a key-not-detected warning. Where do I start?

Start with the CR2032. A weak battery on this fob doesn't always mean zero function. It can mean inconsistent function, short range, slow door handle response, or a warning that shows up and then clears. That pattern is almost always the battery before it's anything else.

If a fresh battery doesn't clear it, try the backup method: fob held directly against the start button while pressing the brake. That bypasses the wireless path and reads the fob at close range.

Still getting the warning after that? A few other things show up on EV6 forums: RFID-blocking phone cases or wallet inserts placed right next to the fob can interfere with the signal. Some owners report the warning appearing briefly after the car sits for a while in hot weather, then clearing on its own.

If none of that resolves it, the problem could be in the fob antenna, the door handle sensor, or the vehicle's receiver. That's when you call for a proper diagnosis rather than guessing at parts.

I bought a replacement EV6 fob online. Can you just program it for me?

Yes, as long as the fob is the correct one for your vehicle. Bring it and I'll verify it against the factory FCC ID on your original before touching anything. If it matches, programming is done through the diagnostic port on site.

One thing to know: adding a key to an EV6 also clears and re-registers all keys in the system. If you have a second fob, bring that one too so it gets enrolled in the same session. Leave it home and it stops working.

I lost both EV6 keys. Is all-keys-lost even possible without going to the dealer?

It is. All-keys-lost on a 2024 EV6 is a job I can do in the field. It takes longer than adding a spare because the system has to be fully reset before new keys can be enrolled, and that reset has a timed sequence built in. Plan for more time on site compared to a standard spare-key job.
