Lost Canyons Golf Club area, and the EV6 owner's smart key decided to die right in the middle of his morning routine.
Started with the classic "Key not in vehicle" message while the fob sat on the center console. He'd already changed the CR2032 twice, held it against the start button, even tried his wife's backup. Nothing. The car just sat there, charged up and ready to go nowhere.
I pulled up with my Autel IM608 and ran a quick scan. BCM showed the fob signal fine, but wouldn't accept it. Turns out the 12V battery was sitting at 11.2V, just low enough to mess with the smart key module but not trigger any other warnings.
Here's the thing about EV6s: that 12V battery runs everything except the drive motors. When it drops, the smart key system is first to act up. I hooked up a jump pack to bring the 12V back to proper voltage, then reprogrammed his existing fob through the OBD port. Ten minutes later, all seven buttons worked perfect and the car started like nothing happened.
He asked about dealer pricing out of curiosity. When I told him they wanted three days and way more than what he just paid, he just shook his head and said something about keeping my number handy.
