A guy out in Santa Susana Knolls called me about his 2025 EV6. He'd had a key made by another locksmith a couple of weeks earlier, and for a while it seemed fine. Then it got inconsistent. Morning commute, no problem. By evening, the start button would flash a key-not-detected warning and the car just sat there.
He figured it was the car. Maybe a charging issue, maybe something electrical. He'd already had the dealer's service line tell him to bring it in.
I met him in his driveway. The fob would lock and unlock the car no problem, which threw him off because he thought that meant the key was good. But remote functions and immobilizer functions are handled differently. A fob can talk to the body control module fine and still fail the deeper security handshake that authorizes a start. That's not a car problem. That's a programming problem.
I pulled out my diagnostic equipment and read the key data. The transponder chip that had been used was the wrong generation for this platform. It had passed the initial enrollment, which happens, but over several drive cycles the vehicle's security system ran deeper verification and the mismatch started showing up. Intermittent at first, then more frequent.
I programmed a new key with the correct chip matched to the 2025 EV6. Checked the fob battery while I was at it, because a low CR2032 on top of a marginal programming job is a bad combination. Ran through the door handles, the start button, the lock and unlock functions, and every button on the fob before I called it done.
He texted me two weeks later. Working every time.
The dealer comparison came up almost as an afterthought. He'd gotten a quote. It was a lot. He saved a good chunk coming to me instead, and he didn't have to tow the car anywhere.
