Out near Sandyland Cove, I got a call from a fleet dispatcher who managed a small pool of company cars for a quick-lube shop. Two of the vehicles were 2009 Kia Spectras, and both had remote fobs that had been through years of pocket abuse.
One was held together with electrical tape. The other had a cracked housing and a button pad so worn you couldn't feel the raised surfaces anymore.

When I pulled up, I checked the fobs before anything else. The remote boards inside were both intact, no corrosion, no cracked solder points. The housings were wrecked but the electronics had held up. That's pretty common on this generation of Kia remote. The plastic takes the beating so the board doesn't have to.
I swapped both boards into fresh housings, installed new CR2032 cells, and cut replacement blades to match the vehicles. Then I ran through the full button test on each fob: lock, unlock, and the other two buttons, confirmed range from across the parking lot. Both remotes worked like they came out of the box.
His total for both cars came out to a fraction of what the dealer wanted for just one. He stood there doing the math in his head, then just nodded and said he wished he'd called sooner.
