2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a 2018 Discovery Sport?

You call, give me the year, make, model, and VIN, and I confirm the correct fob and blade for your vehicle before I show up. When I arrive, I cut the emergency insert blade to match your locks, then connect to the OBD port with JLR-compatible diagnostic equipment to enroll the new fob to the vehicle's immobilizer. After that, I test the start button, the remote lock and unlock, and the physical blade in the door cylinder.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership - registration or title works. I'll verify the VIN from the dash or door jamb before starting, which is standard whether you go through a locksmith or a dealer. That step takes a couple of minutes on site, not a separate appointment like some dealers require before they'll even place the parts order.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2018 Discovery Sport. Can I program it myself?

No. This generation requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob to the vehicle's immobilizer. There's no button sequence, no ignition cycling trick that handles it. The fob you bought online is just hardware until it gets enrolled - it won't start the car or reliably operate the locks. You still need someone with the right tools to pair it to your specific vehicle.

Q: All my keys for the 2018 Discovery Sport are lost or broken. Is that a harder job?

It's a longer process, but it's a standard job. All-keys-lost on this vehicle means the immobilizer needs to be handled through the diagnostic port to accept new credentials. The previously registered fobs get wiped so they can't be used to start the car even if someone finds them. Then the new fob gets enrolled fresh. It takes more time than adding a spare when you have a working key, partly because there's a timed sequence involved in the reset.

2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in Rose Park called me on a Tuesday morning. Her 2018 Discovery Sport was sitting in the driveway and wouldn't start.

The fob was locking and unlocking the doors just fine, so she knew the battery wasn't dead. What she was getting was a key-not-detected warning on the dash every time she pressed the start button, even with the fob sitting right on the center console the way the manual suggests when the battery is low.

She had already swapped the CR2032 twice. Both times, same warning.

When I got there I confirmed what she was describing: remote functions were alive, but the vehicle's immobilizer wasn't seeing the fob as a valid start credential. That's a distinct failure mode on this generation. The remote and the start authorization are handled separately, so you can have one working and the other not. She had a half-working key, which is almost more confusing than a fully dead one.

I connected the programming equipment to the OBD port, re-enrolled her existing fob, and confirmed the immobilizer was accepting it. Start button worked on the first press after that. Tested every button, tested the physical blade, walked the door handles. The whole thing took under an hour in her driveway.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a significant wait for parts plus labor. She didn't need a new key at all.

Land Rover Discovery Sport Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. Everything comes to you. I'll come to your driveway in Rose Park or wherever the vehicle is in the Oxnard area with the right key blank, cutting equipment, and the diagnostic tools needed to enroll a new fob to this specific vehicle. Land Rover dealers typically require the vehicle to be present at the service bay, and if you're down to zero working keys, that means a flatbed.
