Got a call from someone over at the Rose Shopping Center in Oxnard. She had a 2007 GL450 and one working key left. The second one had been sitting in a junk drawer with a dead CR2025 for over a year. She finally tried to get it going, swapped the battery, and nothing. No remote, no start, nothing.
When I got there I popped the shell open on her hood. Green crust all over the NEC chip contacts and one battery terminal had enough corrosion it looked like a science project. The IR transmitter window was hazy too. Classic moisture damage from that split-shell design Mercedes uses on the IYZ-3312 fob.
Cleaned everything I could, but the board was too far gone. So I cut a new key to her lock data, programmed the transponder through the OBD port to sync with the EIS module, and paired the remote. The whole thing took about 35 minutes. I ran through all four buttons, the lock, unlock, trunk, and panic, then had her start and shut off three times to make sure the immobilizer handshake was solid.
She said she'd been putting it off because the dealer told her two weeks minimum and the car would need to be there. She drove home ten minutes later with two working keys again, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted her.
