Got a call from a guy at Moorpark Marketplace. His 2012 GL350 BlueTEC wouldn't turn over. Dashboard lit up fine, but the EIS wouldn't recognize the key to release the steering lock. He had already tried his spare. Same thing. Both keys, dead to the ignition.
He told me the dealer wanted the vehicle towed in and said it could be a week before they even looked at it. Something about ordering a new EIS module, replacing both keys, and programming from scratch. That whole path gets expensive fast and leaves you without your car.
I got there and pulled the key out, checked the blade and the transponder housing. Both IYZ-3312 fobs looked physically fine. Hooked up to the OBD port and read the EIS. The NEC chip had corrupted key positions, which is a known issue on these X164 modules. The EIS still had life in it. It just needed the key data rewritten, not a full module swap.
Cleared the bad slots, reprogrammed both keys back into the EIS, synced the remote and Keyless-Go functions, tested the steering lock release, and ran both keys through full start cycles. He sat on a bench near the parking lot watching the whole thing on his phone, barely looked up until I handed him both working keys.
No tow. No week-long wait. Done right there in the lot for a fraction of what they wanted.
