2005 Saturn Relay Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Saticoy, I got a call from a guy who had just bought a 2005 Saturn Relay. Previous owner handed him one key and one fob. The fob had clearly been dropped more than once. The lock button worked maybe half the time, the other buttons did nothing reliable, and the housing was held together with what looked like a strip of packing tape wrapped around the middle.
He figured he just needed a battery. He had already tried that. Fresh CR2032, same result. He asked if I could just reprogram the existing fob or if he needed a new one.
I drove out to him. When I opened the fob up, the battery contacts had a visible green tinge on them, old corrosion from a battery that had sat in there way too long before he ever owned it. The CR2032 he installed was making contact on one side and floating on the other. That kind of thing does not show up unless you pull it apart.
Cleaned the contacts, reseated the battery properly, tested range from across the parking area. It came back. Not perfect, but workable enough that we talked through what he actually needed versus what he was worried about. I also walked him through where things stood with getting a spare programmed so he would not be back in the same spot a few months later with zero working keys.
He had called a dealer before me. They quoted him a wait time of several days just to get an appointment, on top of the service fee. He paid a fraction of that, did not have to leave his neighborhood, and had it handled in under an hour.
