Out in Poinsettia, I got a call from a Relay owner who had already been to the dealer. Not for service, just for a quote. She came back with a number that made her put the key problem on hold for three weeks.
When she finally called me, I was already in Ventura for another job, so I swung by the same afternoon. She had one working key and one fob that had gone completely dark. No response on any button, no door lock, nothing.
I pulled the dead fob apart on her driveway. CR2032 was still showing voltage on my meter, so it wasn't the battery itself. The positive contact clip had flattened out almost completely, just barely kissing the cell. I re-tensioned it, reseated the battery, and the fob lit right up. Tested all six buttons, walked around the vehicle, confirmed range front and back.
She asked if it needed programming. It didn't, because the fob itself was fine and still paired. She had been about to pay for a full replacement over a bent metal clip.
The second thing she mentioned was that she wanted a spare made while I was there. So we did that too, programmed it on site, tested it the same way. She paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted just for the diagnostic visit alone.
That's the job. Sometimes it's small. You still have to show up and actually look at it.
