Got a call from a guy near Ventura City Hall who said his 2007 Saturn Relay was "not recognizing the key at all." He sounded pretty sure the whole system was dead.
When I pulled up, he handed me the KOBGT04A remote. Cracked case, buttons worn smooth, and the CR2032 inside was so corroded it had a green ring around the negative terminal. The battery had leaked just enough to mess with the contact plate on the circuit board.
I cleaned the board contacts, put in a fresh CR2032, and programmed a replacement KOBGT04A right there in the parking lot. On GM remotes like this one, you can do a self-learn procedure through the DLC port or the ignition cycle method, depending on what the body control module wants to cooperate with that day. His took the ignition cycle approach without a fight.
Then I tested every button. Lock, unlock, power sliding doors on both sides, hatch release, panic. Walked about 30 feet back to check range. Everything hit clean.
Turns out his car started the whole time. The PK3 passkey system in the ignition cylinder was fine. He just assumed "remote not working" meant the car was immobilized. Two different systems. Once I explained that, he looked relieved and a little annoyed at himself. No reason to be. That confusion is one of the most common calls I get on these GM vans.
Whole thing took less time than the dealer would have spent looking up his VIN.
