Down at Rincon Beach Park in Ventura, a Solterra owner learned the hard way that surfboard wax and smart keys don't mix.
She'd been keeping the HYQ14FBX fob in her wetsuit pocket. The wax got into the button membranes, and two of the five buttons stopped clicking. The lock and unlock still worked, but the hatch release and panic were dead. She tried cleaning it with alcohol wipes. Made it worse.
I popped the fob open on her tailgate. The board was fine, just gunked up where the button contacts sit. Used contact cleaner and a soft brush, then tested each dome switch with my meter. All five came back to life. The CR2450 was still showing 3.1V, so we left it alone.
While I had it apart, I noticed the transponder chip placement. Same exact board layout as the bZ4X keys I'd been doing all month. Toyota DNA all the way through, which explains why my Toyota diagnostic gear talks to these without any Subaru-specific adapters.
She asked what the dealer would've done. They don't clean fobs. New key only, and with the Solterra being so new, parts availability meant at least a week wait. Fixed it right there in the beach parking lot for a fraction of that.
