I got a call from a C30 owner parked near Erbes Road Estates, off the main stretch through Thousand Oaks. His fob had been getting flaky for weeks, and that morning the car threw a key-not-detected warning and he was standing outside it in the parking lot with a dead remote and a lot of uncertainty about what came next.
When I pulled up, the first thing I checked was the battery. CR2450, which some owners never specifically replace because the size is unfamiliar. His was the right cell but it was sitting slightly canted in the housing and the contact was barely touching. I reseated it and tested range. Better, but not right. The contact tab had a slight fatigue bend from a previous swap, so I corrected that and tested every button on the five-button fob before going any further.
Remote function came back. We still needed a programmed spare because he was running on one key with aging hardware, so I cut a replacement blade and ran the programming through the OBD port. Two keys enrolled, both tested at the door and in the ignition, all five buttons confirmed working on each fob.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a multi-day turnaround with the vehicle sitting there. I was done on site in under an hour. He drove out of the lot with two working keys, which is where any Volvo owner should be.
