It was a Tuesday morning, just after 8:30, and the call came from a lot off a business park in Thousand Oaks. Marketing director, client meeting at 10, and her C30 had stopped responding to the fob. She said the car wouldn't acknowledge the key at all, and the dash was showing a key-not-detected warning every time she tried.
Lynn Ranch isn't far, so I was there in under 25 minutes.
She met me in the lot and pointed at the car like it had personally let her down. I checked the backup start slot in the center console first, which is a detail a lot of people skip. The key read from the slot, which told me the transponder side was probably intact. The RF remote side was the problem.
I popped the key housing open on the hood of my van. The CR2450 measured low, not dead flat, but low enough that the transmitter range had dropped to almost nothing. Swapped the cell, reseated the housing properly, and tested the remote range from across the lot. Lock, unlock, all five buttons responding cleanly.
Then I connected to the OBD port just to check for any stored communication faults that could come back and bite her. There was one logged. Cleared it, cycled the ignition, ran through the remote functions again, and let the system settle.
Thirty minutes total. She made her meeting with time to spare.
She mentioned on her way back to the office that the dealer had quoted her a replacement fob plus reprogramming, which would have meant leaving the car and coming back. That wasn't an option that morning.
