1999 BMW 3 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a car this old?

The transponder and the remote electronics on a properly made key will outlast the blade in almost every case. The blade takes the daily mechanical wear. On a 25-year-old 3 Series, the ignition wafers themselves may be worn, which accelerates blade wear on any key, new or old. Change the CR2032 every couple of years before it gets low enough to cause erratic remote behavior. The shell and buttons are the other weak point.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me and I come back. Simple as that. Every key I make is covered. If it stops starting the car, if the remote quits, if anything fails under normal use, I fix or replace it. I also test every function before I leave the job, including remote lock and unlock, and I confirm the engine starts and holds, not just cranks.

Q: My 1999 BMW 3 Series starts and then immediately stalls. Is that a key problem?

That is the classic sign the transponder in the key is not being recognized by the immobilizer. On this generation of 3 Series, the immobilizer reads the chip in the key during the start cycle. If it does not get the right signal, it kills the fuel system within a second or two of the engine firing. The car sounds like it almost wants to start, then drops.

Q: Can I add a spare key to my 1999 BMW 3 Series without going to the dealer?

Yes. This is a standard mobile job. No dealer required. I bring the equipment to enroll the new key to your immobilizer right there in your driveway or wherever the car is sitting. On this generation of 3 Series, adding a spare while you still have a working key is considerably easier than an all-keys-lost situation, so if you are down to one key, now is the time to get a second made.

1999 BMW 3 Series Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A driver near Rancho Santa Fe Village called me on a weekday afternoon. He had his 1999 BMW 3 Series sitting in a lot and the key was binding in the ignition. He could feel the blade flexing and he stopped turning before something snapped. Smart call.

He had been living with the worn blade for a while, just working it a little harder each time. That patience was about to run out on him.

I decoded the lock from the door cylinder, where the wafers still read clean. Cut a fresh blade to match, then moved to the immobilizer side of the job. On a 1999 3 Series, the transponder chip in the key has to be properly enrolled, otherwise the car cranks and dies immediately. One OBD sequence, the module accepted the new key, and the car started on the first turn.

He watched the whole thing from about two feet away, which I prefer. When the engine caught and held, he kind of exhaled and said he had been worried it was something worse.

Back on the road in well under an hour. The dealer option would have meant a tow, a wait measured in days, and a bill measured in pain. A worn blade on a 25-year-old 3 Series in Rancho Santa Fe Village is not a crisis. It is just a job.

BMW 3 Series Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on a 1999 BMW 3 Series?▼

We use quality aftermarket shells and blades that are built to the correct spec for this generation of 3 Series. On a 1999, the priority is getting the transponder correctly enrolled to the immobilizer and the blade cut accurately to the lock. A cheap shell that cracks in six months is annoying. A poorly programmed transponder that corrupts the immobilizer module is a different problem entirely, one that can cost a lot more to fix than the key itself.
