How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?

Three things to watch for before you hand anyone your car.

First, if they will not give you a firm quote for a 2013 BMW 3 Series specifically when you call, that is a bad sign. BMW key work requires specific tools and experience. A tech who hedges on price before showing up often has a very different number once they are standing next to your car.

Second, no company branding on the vehicle and no verifiable business name. Search them before they arrive. A real mobile locksmith has reviews, a business address, and a phone number that matches what they gave you.

Third, cash-only pressure on the spot. That combination of vague pricing and cash demand is a pattern, not a coincidence.

For BMWs specifically, the concern is not just a bad price. Under-equipped techs can damage the immobilizer module if they attempt key enrollment without the right tools. That turns a key replacement into a module replacement, which is a much bigger job. Ask them directly what equipment they use and whether they have worked on this generation of the 3 Series before. A qualified tech will answer that without hesitation.

What is an emergency key and why does the 2013 BMW 3 Series have one?

The emergency key is the metal blade stored inside the fob body. You pop it out with a small tab on the side of the fob.

Its job is door entry only. If your fob battery dies completely, the touch-sensor on the door handle stops working, and you need a physical way in. That is what the blade is for. There is a small hidden keyhole on the driver door, usually behind a cover on the handle surround, where the blade goes.

What the blade does not do is start the car. The immobilizer on this generation of the 3 Series still requires the fob's electronics to be recognized before the engine will run. So a dead fob means you can get inside the car, but you are not going anywhere until the fob is either revived with a new battery or replaced and properly enrolled.

What equipment do you use to program BMW keys?

For the 2013 3 Series and BMW work generally, I run professional BMW-capable diagnostic and programming tools that cover both OBD-level key enrollment and deeper module work. When a fob can be added to an already-running system, OBD programming handles it cleanly. All-keys-lost situations are a different story. On this generation, losing all keys means the immobilizer module has no recognized fob to authenticate against, and standard OBD access alone is not enough to recover it. That requires module-level work, sometimes including reading the module off the bench, before any new key data gets written. I carry the equipment for both scenarios. The reason that matters to you is that a tech who only has a basic code reader and no module-level capability will either fail the job or, worse, partially write bad key data and leave the immobilizer in a state that is harder and more expensive to fix than where it started.

My fob battery is brand new but the car still shows a key-not-detected warning. What is going on?

Battery swaps fix a lot of fob problems, but not all of them.

On the 2013 3 Series, a key-not-detected warning after a fresh battery usually points to one of three things: the battery was seated slightly off and is not making solid contact with both terminals, the fob's internal electronics have failed and the transponder is no longer transmitting, or the fob has been exposed to water or a hard impact that damaged the circuit board internally without any visible sign on the outside.

Try reseating the battery with firm, even pressure. If the warning clears, you are done. If it does not, the fob itself likely needs to be replaced and the new one enrolled to the car. That is a job for someone with the right programming tools, not a battery swap.

Can I buy a replacement fob online and have it programmed, or does the fob have to come from you?

You can source your own fob, but there is a catch.

The fob has to be the correct type for this generation of the 3 Series. Not all fobs sold online are what the listing claims, and an incorrect fob shell or incompatible electronics will not enroll no matter what tools are used. If you go that route, I cannot guarantee the part, and if it turns out to be wrong or counterfeit, you are still paying for the programming attempt.

My preference is to supply the fob myself because I know what I am handing you. Either way, the programming has to be done by someone with proper equipment. There is no self-enroll sequence on this vehicle.
