I was already in Coronado when the call came in, parked near the Ferry Landing waterfront finishing up notes from the job before.
A woman called about her 2001 BMW 3 Series. She had the original key but the remote had stopped working entirely, and when she tried to start the car that morning, it cranked and immediately died. She had been trying the key over and over thinking it would catch. It would not.
That stall pattern tells me something specific. When a BMW of this era cranks and cuts out right away, the immobilizer did not complete its handshake with the key's transponder. On an E46, a dead fob battery can degrade the transponder signal enough to cause exactly this kind of stall at startup, even though the car cranks normally.
Swapped the battery, tested the remote functions, then tested the start sequence. Car fired and held idle. Transponder was reading fine once the battery was replaced.
The remote lock and unlock were working again too. Total time from parking to handing her back the key was under fifteen minutes.
She had already looked up what a dealer visit would cost and told me she was expecting to spend most of her morning on it. She did not. She was back to her day before the Ferry Landing foot traffic even picked up.
