Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. We test everything before we leave - the emergency blade in the door lock, the fob functions, and the engine start authorization through the immobilizer. On a 2011 BMW 3 Series, those are three separate things that all have to work together, and we verify each one.

BMW owner forums have documented cases where locksmiths with the wrong equipment caused module-level problems that required dealer intervention to fix. We use BMW-compatible tools and follow the correct sequence. A replacement key that only half-works is not a replacement key.

On this generation, the fob carries a transponder that communicates with the immobilizer at startup. If you're using the emergency blade with a completely dead fob battery, hold the fob body directly against the start button or ignition area when you try to start. The transponder doesn't need the battery for that short-range read.

If it still stalls with a fresh battery in the fob, that's a different issue - possibly a pairing problem or a module that needs attention. That's a diagnostic job, not a battery swap, and I can sort it on site.

The comfort access door handles stopped responding but the start button still works. Is the fob failing?

Not necessarily the fob. On this generation, the comfort access antenna system and the start-button authorization run through different paths. If the start button still sees the fob but the handles don't respond, the fob itself is likely fine.

First thing to check: fob battery voltage. A battery that's low enough to drop comfort access range can still be strong enough to authorize the ignition at close range. Swap the battery and retest.

If a fresh battery doesn't bring the handles back, you're looking at either an antenna or a module issue in the car, not a fob problem. That's worth diagnosing before spending anything on a new key.
