I got a call from a guy parked near his house in Eucalyptus Hills, off one of those winding streets that backs up against the hills. He had his 2009 BMW 3 Series, a working key that he'd had for years, and a car that suddenly wouldn't start.

He wasn't locked out. The key went in. It turned. The engine cranked. Then it died within two seconds, every single time.

I read the immobilizer system at the OBD port. The key's transponder was registering, but barely. Marginal signal, not a clean read. The immobilizer was allowing the engine to fire and then cutting it because it couldn't hold the handshake.

Cut and programmed a replacement key on site, matched to his car. Tested three cold starts in a row. All clean.

He asked if the dealer would have figured that out. Probably, eventually. But he would have waited four days for the appointment, paid for diagnosis, and then waited again for them to source the key blank. He was back inside his house before lunch.
