2004 BMW 3 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Ask for a license number and a firm written quote before anyone rolls to your location. Scam operations quote one number on the phone and a very different number once they're in your driveway with your car already partly taken apart. On a BMW, the pressure tactic gets worse because the car sounds complicated and they count on that.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. On a 2004 BMW 3 Series, the replacement remote head key needs two things to function correctly: the transponder has to be registered to the immobilizer so the car will start and run, and the remote has to be synced so the lock, unlock, and trunk buttons work. We handle both and test everything before we leave your location.

Q: My BMW starts fine with the key but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Probably not. If the car starts and runs normally, the transponder side of your remote head key is still good. The remote function is separate. On this generation, a dead or weak CR2032 is the most common reason the buttons stop responding, and a fob that's been dropped can lose its sync even with a good battery. Try a fresh CR2032 first. If the battery is new and it still won't respond, a resync is usually all it takes.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2004 3 Series. Can I program it myself?

The remote sync on some E46-generation BMWs can be done through an ignition-based sequence if you already have a working key. But the transponder side, which is what actually lets the engine run, has to be registered to the immobilizer with proper equipment. You can't do that part at home.

2004 BMW 3 Series Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already working near Moonlight Beach on a Saturday night when the call came in. A couple had been at one of the spots near the water, came out to their 2004 BMW 3 Series, and the fob did absolutely nothing. No lock response, no unlock, no feedback at all. They had already decided to leave the car and figure it out Monday.

Then one of them searched for a BMW locksmith, found me, and I was maybe 15 minutes away.

The fob was the original 3-button remote head key and it had the factory battery still in it, which told me most of what I needed to know before I even opened anything. Dead CR2032, fob had lost its sync with the car. I carry CR2032 cells and the right shells for this generation, and they were already in a labeled drawer behind my seat.

Fresh battery, resync the remote, tested every button in the parking lot. Lock, unlock, trunk, all clean. Car started on the first turn. The guy looked at me like I had done something complicated. I told him it was about as simple as a job gets on a BMW.

They drove home that night instead of leaving the car out all weekend. The dealer route would have meant a Monday morning call, a tow if they wanted the car moved, a service appointment days out, and a bill that reflected all of that overhead. This was none of that.

BMW 3 Series Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on BMW vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, the state agency that regulates automotive locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance. For a 2004 BMW 3 Series specifically, the key work involves the immobilizer system, and you want someone who knows this generation's architecture and is using the right equipment for it. The wrong tool or a bad procedure on these older BMW systems can cause real problems that are expensive to undo.
