I was already working near Moonlight Beach on a Saturday night when the call came in. A couple had been at one of the spots near the water, came out to their 2004 BMW 3 Series, and the fob did absolutely nothing. No lock response, no unlock, no feedback at all. They had already decided to leave the car and figure it out Monday.

The fob was the original 3-button remote head key and it had the factory battery still in it, which told me most of what I needed to know before I even opened anything. Dead CR2032, fob had lost its sync with the car. I carry CR2032 cells and the right shells for this generation, and they were already in a labeled drawer behind my seat.
Fresh battery, resync the remote, tested every button in the parking lot. Lock, unlock, trunk, all clean. Car started on the first turn. The guy looked at me like I had done something complicated. I told him it was about as simple as a job gets on a BMW.
They drove home that night instead of leaving the car out all weekend. The dealer route would have meant a Monday morning call, a tow if they wanted the car moved, a service appointment days out, and a bill that reflected all of that overhead. This was none of that.
