There is a watch repair shop off the main stretch in Escondido, over near Bear Valley. I have driven past it a hundred times. A guy came out of that shop and flagged me down because he had already tried another locksmith and was now standing next to a 3 Series that would crank but not run.
He explained it carefully, like he had rehearsed it. The other shop programmed a key. It worked. He drove it home, drove it to work the next day, then on day three it started and died in the parking lot. Cranks every time, fires for half a second, cuts out. The other locksmith told him the DME was failing and he needed to take it to the dealer.
The DME was not failing.
On this generation of 3 Series, the immobilizer system requires the security module and the engine computer to share a synchronized secret value. When that sync is done correctly, the car runs. When it is incomplete, BMW does not just refuse to start immediately. It can grant a short grace period before enforcing the lockout. So the car behaves for a day or two, and then the security logic catches up and shuts it down. That looks exactly like a dying module to someone who does not know what to look for.
I pulled the data from the security module with my programmer, confirmed the sync was off, and completed the sequence with the correct value. His original fob, the factory three-button remote head key, fired the engine clean on the first turn after that. No stall, no hesitation.
He asked what was wrong with the DME. I told him nothing. He just stared at the key for a second.
Dealer route would have been a tow, a diagnosis fee, and probably a week before they figured out it was a programming error from someone else's work. He paid a fraction of that and drove home in the same afternoon.
