Here's what you're actually paying for when you get a 2012 BMW 3 Series key. Three things. The physical fob with the correct button layout and blade profile. The laser-cut blade matched to your car's lock. And the transponder programming so the CAS, FEM, or BDC module accepts the new key and lets the engine start. The dealer charges $200 for those three things. I charge around $95.

The dealer wanted $200 for the same three things plus a day of waiting and a tow from a ski resort. He told me he'd been dreading the idea of being stuck at the lodge without a car.
