I was over in Otay Mesa West on a Tuesday, parked in a lot off Britannia Boulevard, when the call came in. A 2000 BMW X5 owner, worked nearby, had a key situation that had been building for a few weeks. The remote buttons had gotten flaky. Then one morning the lock and unlock stopped responding entirely. She was still starting the car fine, so she ignored it. Then the transponder side started acting up too, and now the car was giving her grief at startup.
She had already called the dealer. Parts had to be ordered. The timeline they quoted her was not one she could work with, and the total they described was not something she wanted to hear.
I pulled up and she walked out on her lunch break. The original fob had a CR2032 in it, and when I opened it up, the battery wasn't the problem. The contact had some corrosion on it, subtle, the kind you'd miss if you just popped it open and looked at the battery itself. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2032, and checked signal on the receiver side. The remote functions came back.
The transponder side needed a closer look. I connected to the OBD port and read the immobilizer data. One of the key slots had a mismatch, the kind that builds up when a key gets partially reprogrammed or takes a write error somewhere along the way. Cleared it, re-registered her key properly, and tested cold start twice.
She went back inside with a working key and a receipt. Took about 40 minutes, start to finish, in the parking lot. She didn't move the car once.
