2000 BMW X5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and what's inside it?

It's a single unit that does two jobs. The key blade cuts into the ignition and turns the cylinder, same as any key. But inside the fob housing there's a transponder chip that has to handshake with the immobilizer before the engine will run. There are also three buttons on the fob body that communicate with the vehicle's receiver for remote lock and unlock functions. The CR2032 battery powers the remote buttons only.

Q: How long does the BMW dealer process actually take for a 2000 X5 key replacement?

Longer than most people expect. For an early X5 like this, the dealer has to order the key by VIN, and parts availability on a vehicle this age can be inconsistent. E53 owners on forums have reported waits anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on what's in stock. Once the key arrives, there's still bench time for programming. The whole process often means multiple trips and working around the service department's schedule.

Q: My 2000 X5 starts fine but all the remote buttons stopped working. Is the key bad?

Not necessarily. On the early X5, the remote receiver is a separate component from the immobilizer, so the two functions can fail independently. First thing to check is the CR2032. These fobs are over two decades old at this point and some of them haven't had a battery change in years. Pop it open, swap the battery, make sure the contacts are clean and the battery is seated flat.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

You can buy a fob shell online. Programming it yourself is a different matter. The 2000 X5 immobilizer system doesn't have a simple onboard add-a-key sequence you can run through the ignition. Registration requires a diagnostic tool that can talk to the immobilizer module and write the new key into the authorized slots. If you show up with an unprogrammed fob you sourced online, I can work with it as long as it matches the factory spec for this vehicle.

2000 BMW X5 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was over in Otay Mesa West on a Tuesday, parked in a lot off Britannia Boulevard, when the call came in. A 2000 BMW X5 owner, worked nearby, had a key situation that had been building for a few weeks.

The remote buttons had gotten flaky. Then one morning the lock and unlock stopped responding entirely. She was still starting the car fine, so she ignored it. Then the transponder side started acting up too, and now the car was giving her grief at startup.

She had already called the dealer. Parts had to be ordered. The timeline they quoted her was not one she could work with, and the total they described was not something she wanted to hear.

I pulled up and she walked out on her lunch break. The original fob had a CR2032 in it, and when I opened it up, the battery wasn't the problem. The contact had some corrosion on it, subtle, the kind you'd miss if you just popped it open and looked at the battery itself. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2032, and checked signal on the receiver side. The remote functions came back.

The transponder side needed a closer look. I connected to the OBD port and read the immobilizer data. One of the key slots had a mismatch, the kind that builds up when a key gets partially reprogrammed or takes a write error somewhere along the way. Cleared it, re-registered her key properly, and tested cold start twice.

She went back inside with a working key and a receipt. Took about 40 minutes, start to finish, in the parking lot. She didn't move the car once.

BMW X5 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the BMW dealer to get a replacement key for a 2000 X5?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with the right BMW-capable diagnostic equipment can cut and program a replacement remote head key on site. The 2000 X5 predates some of the more locked-down modern security architectures, so the programming process doesn't require factory-level account credentials or dealer-exclusive access the way newer BMWs sometimes do. Forum threads on Bimmerpost and E53-era owner communities are full of people who went the mobile locksmith route and got the job done in a parking lot.
