2013 BMW X5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Is a mobile locksmith actually cheaper than going to the BMW dealer?

On BMWs, consistently yes. Dealers bill programming labor separately from the key itself, and that labor rate is steep. Owners on forums regularly report totals that make them wince, especially once a diagnostic fee gets added on top. A mobile locksmith comes to your car, does the same enrollment, and charges one flat rate. You also skip the tow if you're stuck at home, which saves real money on its own.

Q: Does your price include cutting and programming?

Yes. One price covers the key blank, cutting it to your vehicle, enrolling the transponder chip to the immobilizer, and on-site testing before I leave. Nothing gets billed separately. The dealer model is to charge you for each of those steps as individual labor entries, which is how a single replacement key turns into a significant invoice. With me, what I quote on the phone is what you pay.

Q: My 2013 X5 starts and then immediately shuts off. Could that be a key issue?

Yes, and it is one of the more common things I see with this generation. A start-then-stall in under two seconds, especially if it happens every single attempt without variation, points directly to the immobilizer not accepting the key. The engine gets just enough signal to crank but the security system cuts it before it stays running.

Q: Can I get a spare key made for my 2013 X5 before I lose my only one?

Absolutely, and it is worth doing sooner rather than later. All-keys-lost on this generation is a longer job than adding a spare while you still have a working key in hand. With an existing working key present, the enrollment process is simpler and faster. Getting a spare cut and enrolled while you still have your original is the move most owners wish they had done earlier.

2013 BMW X5 Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in the Border Area of San Ysidro, right near the crossing. His 2013 X5 sat in the driveway and he had one key left.

He'd already had a locksmith elsewhere try to cut him a spare, and the new key turned fine but the engine would fire for a second and then shut off immediately. He thought the car had a separate problem now.

It didn't. The cut was fine. The blank that locksmith used just hadn't been enrolled to the vehicle's immobilizer, so the car recognized a turn of the cylinder but rejected the key before it let the engine run. Classic symptom, easy to misread if you're not familiar with how this system works.

I came out with the right blank and the tools to do the enrollment on site. Cut the key to his vehicle, ran the pairing sequence, tested it cold and then again after a few minutes. Started clean both times. He asked what the dealer would have charged and I told him honestly that I didn't know his specific dealer's number, but that it would have been a good chunk more than what he paid me, and he would have waited days, not an hour.

The thing about working in the Border Area is that people here don't have time to sit around waiting for a dealer appointment. They need the car working now. That's exactly what mobile service is for.

BMW X5 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2013 BMW X5 key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number, but it will be a fraction of what the dealer charges. BMW dealers typically break the job into separate line items: the key blank, a cutting fee, programming labor billed by the hour, and sometimes a diagnostic charge before they even start. That adds up fast. With EZ Car Keyz, you get one price that covers the blank, the cut, the immobilizer enrollment, and mobile service to your location in San Ysidro.
