2005 BMW X5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2005 BMW X5 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman in North Park, house off on one of the quieter streets near the park itself.

She had a 2005 X5 that had been sitting in her garage for about a week because the key shell had finally given out completely. The rubber buttons were worn down to the plastic underneath, the blade was loose in the housing, and the chrome accent ring had started lifting. She'd taken it to the dealer expecting a simple fix. They came back with a quote for a full replacement key, programmed and cut, at a price that made her pause long enough to call around.

Here is what the dealer didn't tell her: the electronics inside were completely fine.

The remote head key on this generation X5 carries the transponder and the remote signal board in one unit. When I got there and popped the housing open on the hood of the car, everything inside looked clean. No corrosion on the battery contacts, no cracked board, chip reading exactly as it should. The key was doing its job. The shell was just tired.

I transferred the working internals into a fresh housing, installed new buttons, and cut a replacement blade matched to the vehicle. She watched the whole thing. When I showed her the circuit board before the swap she got quiet for a second and said something like "so it really was just the case." Yeah. That's it.

The car started on the first try. Fob locked and unlocked from across the garage without a hiccup.

She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted for a full replacement that wasn't necessary. The electronics in one of these keys can genuinely outlast the housing by years if the battery gets changed on schedule.
