My key broke off in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, and on the 2012 X5 this is a physical ignition barrel job, not a door lock situation. The key actually turns in the cylinder, so that's where a break happens. We extract the broken piece from the barrel, decode the lock, and cut a replacement key blade to match on site. No need for a full ignition replacement and no need to tow it anywhere. If the barrel itself took damage during the break, we assess that on site and tell you what you're actually looking at before any additional work happens.

What kind of key does the 2012 BMW X5 use?

It's a mechanical turn-key. You insert it into the ignition barrel and turn it to start the vehicle. The key carries a transponder chip inside the head, and when you turn the key, the immobilizer reads that chip. If the chip isn't recognized, the engine won't run, or it'll start and cut out right away.

There's no push-button start, no proximity entry, no fob-only operation on this setup. The physical key does everything. That also means if you lose it or it stops working, you can't drive the car until a replacement is cut and the transponder is properly handled. We do that on site.

My BMW is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do?

On a mechanical key setup like the 2012 X5, a key-not-detected warning usually points to one of three things: the transponder chip in the key is worn or damaged, the immobilizer antenna ring around the ignition barrel has an issue, or the key has lost sync with the vehicle's security system.

First, try your spare key if you have one. If the spare starts the car clean, your primary key is the problem and we can cut and program a replacement. If neither key works, that points further up the chain toward the immobilizer or the antenna, which we diagnose on site. Don't keep cranking it -- repeated failed attempts can sometimes complicate the situation depending on how the security system responds to them.

Can I get a replacement key cut at a hardware store or do I need a locksmith?

A hardware store can sometimes copy the physical blade shape, but they cannot handle the transponder. You'd end up with a key that physically turns the ignition and does nothing else, because the immobilizer won't recognize the chip. The car either won't start or will start and immediately stall.

For the 2012 X5 you need someone who can both cut the blade to your vehicle and properly handle the transponder enrollment. We do both on site. Buying a pre-cut key online has the same problem -- the blade may or may not be right, and the chip still needs to be paired to your specific car.

The engine starts but shuts off after a second or two. Could this be a key problem?

That's a classic immobilizer response. The engine fires because it got fuel and spark, then the security system cuts it when it doesn't fully authenticate the key. It looks like a mechanical or electrical problem, but it's usually the transponder side of the key, the antenna ring at the ignition barrel, or a sync issue between the key and the immobilizer.

This is something I diagnose on site. Don't assume it's a bigger engine problem until the key system is ruled out. In my experience, a start-then-stall on a BMW with a mechanical key points to the security system more often than not.
