I got a call out to Shadowridge from a guy who had already been through it once. He had hired another locksmith after losing his only key to his 2017 BMW X5, paid for the work, and ended up with a fob that would not start the car. Every time he turned it over, the engine caught for half a second and died. The other locksmith told him the immobilizer module was faulty and walked.

When I got there, I went straight to the engine control unit before touching anything else. The body electronics module had already been accessed - whoever worked on it before had written a key into the system. But nobody had pulled the internal security number from the engine module. On this generation of X5, that number has to match across the body electronics module, the engine control unit, and the key. Without that match, the engine management system cuts fuel. That is the whole point of the system. You cannot route around it.

I read the security number directly from the engine module, synced it through properly, and retested. Clean start. I ran it three times back to back to be sure, then walked through every function on the fob.

He had already spent money on the first attempt. I could not fix that part. What I could do was finish the job correctly, charge him a fraction of what the dealer quoted, and leave him with a key that actually worked. He stood there watching the screen during the security number sync, just to see it happen. I think after the first experience he needed to see the confirmation himself.
