2006 BMW X5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote head key, and how does it work on the 2006 X5?

A remote head key combines two separate functions in one unit. The metal blade cuts into and operates the door locks and ignition cylinder mechanically. The transponder chip inside the head communicates with the immobilizer system when you turn the key, and the car will not start unless that chip is recognized. Separately, the fob buttons on the same unit send a radio signal on the remote entry side, which handles the lock, unlock, and trunk functions.

Q: How long does the BMW dealer process actually take for a 2006 X5 key replacement?

Longer than most people expect. For older BMW models, keys are not always sitting in dealer stock. Depending on the dealer and current parts availability, you can be looking at several days to a couple of weeks just waiting on the key to arrive. Once it does, programming is typically scheduled as a separate appointment. X5 owners on forums have reported waits of a week or more before they even got to the programming step.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and have it programmed, or does the key have to come from BMW?

You can buy an aftermarket remote head key, and many owners do. The key itself does not have to come from BMW. What matters is that the replacement matches the correct specifications for your 2006 X5 and carries the right transponder chip inside. The fob ID on the back should match the factory fob ID your car was set up for. If it doesn't match, programming may not complete correctly.

Q: My 2006 X5 key fob remote stopped working but the car still starts fine. Do I need a whole new key?

Probably not. Start with the CR2032 battery. On these fobs the remote functions are battery-dependent but the transponder is not, so a dead CR2032 kills the lock and unlock buttons while leaving your start function totally unaffected. That's actually a useful diagnostic: if the car starts but the buttons are dead, swap the battery first. If a fresh CR2032 doesn't bring the remote back, the next step is checking whether the fob needs to be re-synced to the remote receiver.

2006 BMW X5 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked in the Richland area of San Marcos. He was staying nearby and had been running errands all morning when the fob just stopped working mid-afternoon. Remote buttons dead, and then the car wouldn't authorize the start.

He was convinced the fob battery had died. It had, but that wasn't the whole story.

I showed up and pulled the fob apart first. Fresh CR2032, contacts were fine, remote functions came back. But the car still wouldn't authorize. That told me the transponder side had a separate issue, which on these early X5s comes down to the immobilizer module and how it's reading that particular key slot.

I connected my diagnostic equipment through the OBD port and read the key slot data. One slot was showing a mismatch, which happens on these. Corrected it, verified the key was being recognized, confirmed remote lock and unlock were working, and walked the doors.

The whole thing took under an hour. He had assumed he was looking at a tow and a couple of days waiting on parts at a dealer. Instead it was done in the parking lot. Dealer comparison was a real one here because he had already called them before calling me, and the number they quoted was painful. He saved a good chunk, and more importantly he didn't lose two days of his trip.

BMW X5 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the BMW dealer to get a replacement key for my 2006 X5?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with BMW-specific tooling can handle this on site. The 2006 X5 uses a remote head key with a transponder that has to be enrolled into the immobilizer system, and that does require professional equipment. But it doesn't require a dealer. A lot of X5 owners on forums like Bimmerpost assume the dealer is the only option because BMW's key system is more involved than a basic domestic transponder key.
