2004 BMW X5 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy over in The Crosby called me about a 2004 BMW X5 he'd just picked up from a private seller in Rancho Santa Fe. Nice truck, one key. The seller had mentioned getting a spare cut "at any locksmith." That advice was off by a wide margin.
He'd already called the BMW dealer. The number they gave him was real, and it landed on him like a tax bill. He wasn't expecting a BMW key to cost that much. He found me and asked if the dealer price was legitimate or if he was getting worked.
I told him it was legitimate for a dealer, but that I do the same job for a fraction of what they wanted. He asked how that was possible. I explained that my overhead is a van and a set of tools, not a service department with a parts counter and a two-day wait for a key to be ordered by VIN.
I met him at his place. The X5 uses a remote head key with a three-button fob and a transponder chip built into the same unit. I read the EWS data, prepared a matching key, cut the blade on my machine, and synced both the transponder and the remote in one visit. No tow. No waiting room.
Before I left, I walked him through the difference between adding a spare key while one working key exists versus an all-keys-lost situation, where every key is gone and the process gets significantly longer and more involved. He understood immediately. Having a spare now was the move.
He left with two working keys, and the dealer comparison was something he brought up, not me. The savings spoke for themselves.
