All-keys-lost on a BMW with push-button start is the job that most mobile locksmiths won't quote over the phone. The body electronics module on the 2018 X5 stores encrypted key data in internal memory. With no working key present, the module has to be accessed at the board level, the security data read out, new key data calculated from it, written back, and then synchronized with the engine control unit. One power interruption during the write cycle and you have a very expensive paperweight. That's why the job gets turned down constantly.

The process on the F15 X5 isn't something you do by feel. You back up the full module data before anything else, no exceptions. Then you run the key calculation, generate the replacement fob, write the new data back to the module, and sync the result with the engine management system. His fob is a four-button smart key running a CR2032. The sync completed clean on the first attempt, which is never guaranteed on a module that's been sitting dead.

The dealer route would have meant a tow, a wait, and a bill that made what I charged look like rounding error. I didn't bring that up. He already knew.
