2011 BMW X5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2011 BMW X5 Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the industrial stretch off Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa when the call came in. A woman needed a spare key made for her 2011 BMW X5. She had one working key, so it was not an emergency, but she was deliberate about who she called. She told me upfront that she had looked up my license on the BSIS website before dialing.

That detail mattered, because her previous experience had not gone well. She had called someone who showed up in a personal car, no markings, no real equipment, and could not read the security module on her BMW at all. That person still took her money and left. She was not going through that again.

I pulled up, showed her the company van, handed her a card with the license number printed on it, and got to work. The X5 key system on this generation is not a simple duplication. The replacement key has to be introduced to the vehicle security system through the diagnostic port, and the transponder has to be recognized before the car will run. I walked her through what I was doing while the process ran. She watched the whole thing.

When the new key turned and the engine stayed running, she just nodded. No drama. That was exactly what she wanted. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number that made her pause, and I came in well under that. But honestly, what she kept coming back to was the license. She said she wanted a real business with a real paper trail, and that was worth the call by itself.
