That depends on exactly which key your X5 came with. The 2011 X5 is listed as a mechanical key vehicle, meaning the key blade is the primary entry and ignition tool rather than a proximity fob with a hidden insert. If you are looking at a fob-style remote unit, check the back for a small release button that slides out a metal blade. That blade fits a concealed slot behind a cover on the driver door handle for physical entry when needed. If your key is a straight blade key without a fob body, there is no hidden insert because the blade is already the key. Either way, if you are locked out or need a replacement cut, that is a standard on-site job.

I bought a replacement key blank online for my 2011 BMW X5. Can I just get it cut and use it?

Cutting it is the easy part. The blade can be cut to your vehicle by code or by decoding your existing key or lock. But a cut blade alone will not get the engine to stay running if the transponder in that key has not been introduced to the security system. If you drop the new key in the ignition and the car stalls right away, that is why. The key looks right, turns right, but the vehicle does not recognize it yet. Programming that transponder to the security module is the step that makes it a working key, and that requires the right diagnostic equipment.
