2009 Chevrolet Aveo
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for the 2009 Aveo?

You call, give me the year, make, model, and VIN, and I confirm what your Aveo needs and give you a price before I'm ever in the van. When I arrive, I pull the VIN from your dash plate or door jamb to verify specs, cut the replacement key blade to your vehicle, program the transponder so the immobilizer recognizes it, sync the remote functions, and test everything start to finish before I hand it to you.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Three things: the vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership, your registration or title works fine. I pull the VIN on site to verify the correct key specs for your Aveo. Dealers require the same documentation and can look up your key cut code through the VIN in their system, but they still need the car there for programming. I handle the verification, cutting, and programming all at your location without the trip.

Q: My 2009 Aveo starts fine but the lock and unlock buttons on the fob stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On the Aveo remote head key, the transponder that starts the car and the remote circuit that runs the lock and unlock buttons operate independently inside the same housing. If the car starts, the transponder side is fine. First thing to check is the battery inside the fob. When the remote range gets short or the buttons stop responding entirely, a weak battery is the most common cause on these.

Q: I bought a replacement fob for my Aveo online. Can I program it myself?

The remote portion of an Aveo remote head key does have an onboard relearn procedure that some owners have completed without professional equipment, using an ignition-turn sequence. However, the transponder chip that actually allows the engine to start is a separate matter and typically requires a programmer to enroll it to the vehicle's immobilizer. If you skip that step, the remote buttons may work but the car won't start with the new key.

2009 Chevrolet Aveo Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was parked at her place near Downtown IB and the flip key had basically given up. The shell had split right at the hinge, the blade was rocking around, and every time she pulled it from her pocket she was white-knuckling it so the two halves wouldn't separate completely.

She had already called the dealer. They quoted her a full replacement, cut and programmed, no discussion about what was actually wrong with the key she already had.

I met her at her garage and the first thing I did was look at what she brought me. The blade was still solid, the circuit board was intact, and the transponder chip read fine. The only problem was the shell had cracked the way these Aveo flip keys crack, same pattern I see regularly. Hinge stress, pocket carry, a few years of use.

I transferred her working board and chip into a fresh shell, verified the blade cut, fit the new blade, and tested remote functions and ignition start one after the other.

The whole job happened in her driveway. She never moved the car. The dealer quote was for something she didn't need.

Chevrolet Aveo Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2009 Chevrolet Aveo somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. I come to you. Wherever the Aveo is sitting, whether that's your driveway off Palm Avenue, a parking lot in Downtown IB, or your job, that's where the work happens. Dealers typically want the car in their service bay, and if you're down to zero working keys, that means a tow. I've seen owners on forums describe being told they'd need to tow the vehicle in and wait days for the parts to be ordered.
