2010 Chevrolet Aveo Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman flagged me down through a text, not a call, which already told me she was stressed. She was parked in a Downtown Oceanside lot off Coast Highway, keys in hand, car sitting dead. The Aveo would crank but cut off within a second or two every time. She thought the battery was dying.
It was not the battery.
The dash was showing a security-related warning and the engine was killing itself on purpose. That is the immobilizer doing exactly what it is supposed to do when it does not recognize the key signal. Her remote head key was the original, and after twelve years the transponder side had gone soft. It was not reading clean anymore.
I pulled my programming gear out of the van and plugged into the OBD port. The Aveo's security system needed a new key enrolled and the old one cleared from active memory since she was keeping it as a backup. I cut a fresh key blade to match her lock, programmed the transponder to the car's immobilizer, and verified the remote buttons were working on the new unit.
Total time in that lot: under forty minutes. She had a morning meeting she was going to miss if this dragged out. It did not drag out.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of a day and a half just to be seen, on top of the tow they said she needed. Coming to her saved all of that.
