I got a call from a woman parked in a lot off Highland Avenue in Downtown National City. Her 1998 Blazer key was fine, car started no problem, but her fob had gone completely dead. Doors had to be unlocked by hand every time. She had already swapped the battery herself, bought one from a dollar store, and nothing changed.
When I got there she handed me the fob and I could see the battery was a CR2032, which is correct. But the one she bought was a no-name cell with a low resting voltage. Tested it on my meter and it was reading low right out of the package. Happens more than people expect.
Popped in a quality CR2032, and one of the four buttons came back but the others stayed dead. That told me the fob itself had an issue, not just the battery. Contacts inside were oxidized and one of the button pads had worn down. Common on a fob this age.
I had a replacement fob with me. The 1998 Blazer remote system uses an onboard relearn sequence that doesn't need a scan tool for the remote side, which is one of the reasons I like working these older GMs. Ran through the relearn with her existing key, verified all four buttons, and she was back to normal in about twenty minutes.
She mentioned the dealer had told her over the phone that fob work would require a service appointment and parts order. She had been hand-keying her doors for two weeks waiting to deal with it. That part always gets me.
