Out in the Libby Lake area of Oceanside, I got a call from a guy who had been fighting his 1999 Chevrolet Blazer for a solid month. Not a lockout, not a lost key.
The ignition had turned into a project every single morning. Jiggle the key, pull it back slightly, push forward, try again. Some days it cooperated. Some days he sat in the driveway for five minutes coaxing it.
The dealer told him he needed a new ignition cylinder, new keys cut to the replacement, and a full reprogram. He was two days away from booking the appointment.
When I got there and looked at the cylinder, the problem was worn internal wafers, not a failed cylinder. The wafers wear down over time and stop gripping the key profile cleanly. The fix is to decode the lock, replace the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. The cylinder itself was fine and did not need to come out.
I decoded it, swapped the worn wafers, and cut a replacement key on site. His separate remote fob, which had been working the whole time, re-paired without drama once we confirmed the vehicle battery was solid.
I showed him the old wafers before I left so he could see exactly what had been slipping. He could see the wear with his own eyes. He saved a significant chunk compared to the dealer quote, kept his original cylinder, and the key has turned clean ever since.
The dealer was not wrong that the ignition needed attention. They were just quoting the maximum solution for what turned out to be a targeted repair.
