A guy in the Westwood neighborhood of Rancho Bernardo texted me on a Saturday afternoon. He had the key in his hand, car started fine, but the fob was completely dead. Nothing on lock, nothing on unlock, trunk button did nothing. He had already put in a fresh CR2032 and confirmed it was seated right. Still nothing.
When I got to him, the fob itself checked out. The battery contact looked clean. I ran the onboard programming sequence with his working key to re-enroll the fob, and it paired right up. All four buttons came back. Lock, unlock, trunk, the whole thing.
Turned out at some point the fob had been dropped out of memory, which happens on these older systems when the battery goes completely flat for long enough or if someone had cycled the programming sequence and not completed it correctly. The fob was not broken. It just needed to be re-introduced to the car.
The whole job happened in his driveway. He did not have to tow it anywhere, and he did not have to wait until Monday for a dealer appointment. He said the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just for the part. We were done in under twenty minutes.
