I got a call from someone parked off the main stretch near Santaluz on a Tuesday afternoon. She had snapped her only key off in the door lock. Not the ignition, the door lock. The bow of the key just sheared clean at the shoulder, probably from years of a stiff cylinder fighting her every time.

The broken half was still sitting in the lock.

I extracted it with a hook pick and a pair of extractor pliers, slow and careful so I didn't push it deeper. Once it was out, I could read the cuts directly from the broken piece. That saved the step of pulling the VIN and running the key code, which I would have done otherwise. Cut the new key right there on the hood, tried it in the door, then the ignition. Smooth both ways.

The whole visit was maybe twenty-five minutes. She mentioned she had called the dealer first and they told her the car needed to come in on a flatbed because they couldn't do anything without the vehicle on site. That would have been a tow bill on top of whatever they charged for the key. She skipped all of that.

One new key, cut from what was left of the old one, done in her driveway in Santaluz.
