2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was over near Ferry Landing in Coronado on a Tuesday when the call came in. Owner of a 2002 Monte Carlo, same silver coupe you see parked in half the driveways in that neighborhood. She had snapped her only key off inside her door lock. Not bent, not worn down. Snapped clean, with maybe a quarter inch of blade still sticking out of the cylinder.

She had already called the dealer. They told her the car needed to come in. No working key meant no driving it in, which meant a tow. Then they'd replace the lock cylinder and cut a new key. The number they quoted her was not small.

I drove over with my extraction tools and my key cutting setup. Got the broken piece out of the cylinder without pulling the whole lock. The cylinder itself was fine, just needed a key to match it. I decoded the cuts right out of the lock face, cut a replacement key blade on site, tested it in the door and the ignition, and she was done.

She watched the whole thing from her driveway. When I handed her the new key and it turned the ignition on the first try, she just laughed a little and said she'd been dreading this for two days.

She paid a fraction of what the dealer had quoted. No tow, no waiting room, no leaving the car somewhere overnight.
