2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How fast can you get to my location?

For most calls in Otay Mesa and the Ocean View Hills area, I can usually be there within 30 minutes depending on where I am when you reach me. Everything I need for a 2002 Trailblazer is already loaded: key blanks, the CR2032 cells for the fob, and the programming equipment. There is no waiting on a parts order or a service bay opening up.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today?

Yes. Same-day is the standard, not the exception. These older GM trucks are a known quantity and I stock what I need for them. You are not waiting on a dealer to order a fob, schedule a programming appointment, or tell you to tow it in. One call and I come to wherever the Trailblazer is sitting, which matters a lot when it is parked in a tight spot or a complex that a tow truck can't reach.

Q: My Trailblazer starts and immediately stalls. The key turns fine but the engine won't stay running. What is going on?

That pattern, starts and dies right away, points to the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder chip in the key. It is one of the most common complaints on these early 2000s GM trucks when a key is worn, damaged, or was replaced with a blank that never got properly programmed. The ignition cylinder reads the chip every time you turn the key.

Q: My fob stopped working but the key still starts the truck. Do I need to replace the whole thing or just the fob?

Just the fob. On the 2002 Trailblazer the remote and the ignition key are separate pieces, so a dead fob does not affect starting. First thing to check is the CR2032 battery. These fobs are known to give weak range or stop responding entirely before owners realize the battery is the issue. Swap it, reseat the contacts, and retest. If a fresh battery does not bring it back, the fob may need to be reprogrammed to the vehicle.

2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Otay Mesa, near the Ocean View Hills side, I got a call from a guy who lived in a townhouse complex with covered assigned parking. The spots were wedged in tight, low clearance at the entrance, a wall on one side, his neighbor's bumper on the other. The Trailblazer wasn't going anywhere without a working key.

He had one key left and it was worn down enough that the ignition was getting finicky. Some mornings it started, some mornings he had to wiggle it and wait. The morning he called me, it stopped cooperating entirely. No tow truck was fitting in there anyway, so towing it to the dealer wasn't even on the table.

I parked on the street and walked in with my bag. Cut a replacement key to match his lock, programmed the transponder so the immobilizer would accept it, and then went through the onboard procedure to pair his existing fob to confirm it was still reading correctly. Walked through every button, checked the locks from both sides, started the truck twice to confirm the new key wasn't going to give him the same grief.

He asked about a spare and I had the blank on me, so we did a second key while I was already there. He got two working keys out of it and the truck never moved an inch from that covered spot.

The dealer would have meant a tow, a wait, and a bill that made him wince when he looked it up online. He saved a good chunk going the mobile route.

How long does a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer key replacement take?▼

Depends on what you need. If you have a working key and just want a spare, adding a second key and programming the fob is typically a 20 to 30 minute job on site. All-keys-lost takes longer. On these early 2000s GM trucks, the immobilizer has a security relearn cycle built into the process. Once the new key is cut and the programming sequence starts, there is a mandatory wait period before the system accepts the new key.
