A guy in San Ysidro Village called me on a Tuesday around noon. He worked in an office building off the main strip and his 2002 Taurus had been sitting in the lot since Monday afternoon. He had one key, it had been working fine, then one morning it just wouldn't start. The car would crank, lights came on, everything seemed normal, but it would fire for half a second and immediately die. Classic immobilizer cut.
He had already called the dealer. They wanted him to tow it in, which meant finding a tow truck, missing work, and waiting days for an opening. He found me instead.
I got to his lot in under thirty minutes. The key itself was reading fine mechanically. The transponder chip inside was intact. What had happened was a bit of corrosion on the key's chip contact area, probably from being on a ring with wet keys for a few years. The immobilizer wasn't seeing it reliably.
I cleaned the contact, verified the transponder was reading correctly with my programmer, and ran the OBD cycle to confirm the key was enrolled and the system was happy. Car started clean on the first try. I cut him a fresh spare on the spot so he'd never be in this position again.
He walked back inside before his 1pm meeting. The Taurus never left the parking spot.
