I got a call from a mechanic shop off the main stretch in Otay Mesa, over near the Nestor side. A customer's 2015 Taurus was sitting in one of their bays and going nowhere.
The story was messy before I arrived. Another locksmith had tried to program a replacement smart key. Somewhere mid-sequence, the car battery dropped voltage. From there, the actual key registration went fine. The new five-button fob paired on the first attempt. I walked every function: door lock, door unlock, trunk release, and remote start confirmation that the system was reading the fob correctly from distance. Everything behaved.
The whole job took close to an hour and a half. Longer than a clean all-keys-lost job would normally take, because the fault cleanup adds time. The customer had already been quoted a flatbed tow and a multi-day dealer visit. He saved a good chunk and drove out the same afternoon.
I showed the shop what to watch for. If a customer's battery is marginal, stabilize it before any programming work starts. That single step prevents most of the ugly scenarios.
