Out in Eucalyptus Hills, I got a call from a guy who had been dealing with an intermittent key issue for a few weeks before it finally stopped working entirely. He had already replaced the CR2032 himself, which was the right first move, and it bought him maybe ten days before the fob went unresponsive again.
When I pulled up, I asked him to show me what it was doing. The dash was throwing a key-not-detected warning every time he approached the car. The door handles were not waking up. He was getting in with the emergency blade tucked inside the fob, then holding the fob against the start button to get it running. He had figured out that workaround on his own, which told me the immobilizer was still talking to the fob at very close range, but the passive entry side had quit.
I opened the fob. The battery contacts had a faint layer of oxidation, not visible until you get light on them at the right angle. Cleaned those, seated a fresh CR2032 the right way, and retested. Passive entry came back on both door handles. Good sign, but not the whole story.
I still ran a full function check: lock, unlock, the remaining buttons, and repeated start cycles from normal walking distance. Everything held. In his case the fob did not need replacement or reprogramming, just proper contact cleaning and a correctly seated cell.
He mentioned he had called the dealer first and was quoted a wait time measured in days plus a cost he was not happy about. That came up almost as an aside. The part that stuck with him was that I was parked in his driveway in Eucalyptus Hills within the hour and he watched the whole thing happen in front of him.
