I was parked near the Mission San Luis Rey Area running another call when the message came in. Guy said he'd already paid a locksmith and his key still wasn't right.
That's a specific kind of frustrating. Not "my key broke." Not "I lost it." He had paid someone, waited, and was still stuck.
By the time I got to him, the story came out in pieces. He'd searched for a locksmith on his phone, clicked a sponsored result, and got a phone quote that sounded reasonable. The tech who showed up didn't quote a revised price until he was already into the job. The final number was several times what he was told. Worse, the fob he left with would start the car but none of the five remote buttons did anything. Lock, unlock, trunk, none of it. The guy had no way to know if that was normal or not. He assumed it was fine until he tried to lock his car from across a parking lot.

When I pulled up, I went through the fob properly. The remote side and the transponder side of that key both have to be registered to the vehicle. Whoever worked on it before had only done half the job. The immobilizer was accepting the key to start the engine, but the remote functions had never been paired. Twenty minutes of proper work with my programmer and all five buttons came back. Start, lock, unlock, panic, trunk release, everything responding the way it should.
He didn't need a new fob. He needed the job done right the first time.
