1999 Jaguar XJ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

1999 Jaguar XJ Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over near Libby Lake, I got a call from a man who had been using his 1999 Jaguar XJ as his one reliable car since he retired.

He was doing physical therapy a few blocks away and had handed his spare key to a family member months back, so he was down to a single key. That morning, the car cranked, almost caught, and died. Cranked again. Died again. He thought it was fuel. His mechanic thought it was fuel. Nobody was thinking about the key.

I got there and asked him to try it while I watched. It cranked, fired for maybe two seconds, and quit. That pattern is the immobilizer cutting the engine after a failed transponder read. I checked the key itself. The plastic head was cracked along the seam, which is common on these after twenty-plus years of being on a heavy keychain. The transponder inside can shift just enough from a crack like that to read inconsistently, especially when the key warms up and the plastic flexes slightly.

I cut a new key blade to the vehicle, transferred and verified the transponder enrollment, and had him start it three times in a row before I packed up. Ran every time.

He mentioned the dealer was the only place he had called before me, and they wanted the car towed in and a multi-day wait just to get a diagnosis. He got his answer in a parking lot off Oceanside Boulevard for a fraction of what they wanted, without moving the car.
