A commercial pilot on a layover at the harbor brunch restaurant in Alpine on a Sunday morning told me he'd already been burned. Another locksmith charged him full price for a 2003 Jaguar XJ smart key that never programmed correctly. The car would crank but the immobilizer killed the engine after two seconds. The module wasn't faulty. The locksmith hadn't completed the full security write. Jaguar's KVM requires the key file to be generated from the correct EEPROM data and written to the smart fob in a specific encrypted format. If you use the wrong tool version or skip a step, the key appears learned but isn't permanently registered.
I connected through OBD with my IM608, cleared the failed key data, read fresh KVM data, and generated the correct key file. His smart key, FCC ID NHVWB1U241, had all 4 buttons working plus clean push-to-start with no fuel cutoff. I showed him the confirmation on the IM608 screen so he could see the key was fully registered this time.
He paid me $311. Dealer charges $563 for the same work. He'd already paid the first locksmith too, which I couldn't undo. But I could make sure the job was done right.
